The first entry in my series on rocking chairs is Gary Weeks. This is his signature rocker in walnut.
His chairs are definitely influenced by Sam Maloof, but it is obvious that he has made them his own. I don't know how many chairs he's made, but you only have to read his guarantee to know how serious he is about quality:
"The Weeks Rocker (TM) is guaranteed to be the most comfortable, the most beautiful, and the best constructed rocking chair that you have ever experienced or we will refund your money, including all shipping charges."
With a guarantee like that, he'd be out of business in a heartbeat if everything that comes out of his shop wasn't up to the highest standards.
Gary's website is one of the best I've seen. It has great writing about craftsmanship, chair construction, the different kinds of lumber he uses and the nurturing aspect of rocking chairs. He obviously wants his customers and potential customers to know as much about his work and his process as possible. There's a lot of great stuff, so be sure to go through it thoroughly. As I mentioned in my introductory post, Gary's generosity shows through with the great list of rocking chair makers he features.
